Carnauba wax is yellow in colour and is often applied to cosmetics as an emulsifier or thickening agent. Carnauba wax is used in makeup and personal care products to prevent liquid and oil elements from separating. It also creates a creamy consistency and helps give some items, like lipstick, their structure, so they can be molded and shaped.

Carnauba wax can produce a glossy finish and as such is used in automobile waxes, shoe polishes, dental floss, food products such as sweets, instrument polishes, and floor and furniture waxes and polishes, especially when mixed with beeswax and with turpentine.

Carnauba wax is exuded from the leaves of the Brazilian palm tree known as Copernica cerifera. Also referred to as the Tree of Life, local Brazilians use many of the trees produce for various necessities.

Grown in the north-eastern region of Brazil, the Carnauba tree proliferates along riverbanks, streams, and damp lowlands. Although various Carnauba palms exist in other parts of South America, Africa and Ceylon, Carnauba wax is unique to the Brazilian palm, due to Brazils irregular rainy seasons.
