Meadowsweet has a very long history of herbal use, and it was one of the three most sacred herbs of the ancient Druids. Historically, it has been used as a diuretic and to treat inflammatory conditions, including joint pain and gout.

Studies have found that Meadowsweet can also promote the healing of chronic ulcers and prevent lesions from developing in the stomach. It is used in the treatment of heartburn, hyperacidity, gastritis and peptic ulceration. Its gentle astringency is useful in treating diarrhoea, especially in children.
