Elecampane contains chemicals that might reduce inflammation and kill bacteria. It has traditionally been used for lung diseases including asthma, bronchitis, and whooping cough, and also used to prevent coughing, and as an expectorant to help loosen phlegm.

Elecampane is sometimes used to flavour foods and beverages, or as a fragrance in cosmetics and soaps.
