Syn: Tabebuia impetiginosa; Tabebuia palmeri; Handroanthus impetiginosus.

Inner bark is dried, shredded and boiled to make a medicinal tea used during flu and cold season and for easing smokers cough. It is said to work as an expectorant, freeing deeply embedded mucus and contaminates during the first three to ten days of treatment. It has also been used as an immunostimulant and adaptogen, and is widely used to treat intestinal candidiasis.

It should be noted that ethnomedical use of Tabebuia teas is usually short-term, to treat acute ailments, and not as a general tonic. The main active compound in T. impetiginosa, lapachol, has been found to have toxic properties.

Common name: Purple Tabebuia; Pink Trumpet Tree; Lavender Trumpet Tree; Ipe; Taheebo; Lapacho.
